STEAM and Tech Integration News (by Diane Mega)
Calculus, computer science, art, and design production collided this Spring in a trial run of "Parametric Equations Meets 3D Printing". Members of the calculus class wrote computer code to create 2D designs using parametric trigonometric functions. Those designs were further transformed (with more code) into 3D meshes. The 3D meshes were fed into rendering software in which our tech integrator, KarolBeth Glover, corrected any anomalies in the mesh. Finally, the designs were turned into physical objects using 3D printing.
Several meshes are shown below along with the actual glow-in-the-dark print of the alien design (created by Jonah Steiss Class of 2015). We are still experimenting with printing these designs in hopes of opening the door to designing mathematically-based ornaments, earrings, pendants, keychains, etc. So much fun!
