TIGER Logo2016You might ask what is TIGER? “TIGER (Theater Integrating Guidance, Education, and Responsibility) is a powerful and exciting collaboration between the Integrated Arts and Counselor Education graduate programs at Plymouth State University.  TIGER is a professional theatre company designed to help children, schools, parents, and communities deal proactively and positively with social issues and concerns facing children in schools today.  Based entirely upon the anonymous writings of school children, a TIGER performance incorporates live actors, theatre, movement, and music to engage school audiences from K-12. By using childrens’ own words, TIGER enables children to hear their own voices as they step back from the experiences of bullying and the intolerance of individual differences to move into more positive social interactions at school and in their community” (https://campus.plymouth.edu/tiger/about-us/).

The Inter-Lakes School District will be introducing a new instructional program in sixth grade entitled Too Good for Drugs. This instructional program was developed by the nonprofit organization Law Enforcement Against Drugs and supported by the Mendez Foundation. In the past, students at both Sandwich and Inter-Lakes experienced the D.A.R.E. program. More recently, our guidance counselor, Ms. Spiro has taught Project ALERT lessons to our students which addressed positive choices and substance abuse.
I am sure you know that New Hampshire, along with every other state in the country, is dealing with the significant challenges presented by the Opioid crisis. This crisis presents a significant health risk to all of us. Parents and educators are concerned about the potential impact to children. As a school, we are taking every possible measure to educate our children and families to this ongoing health threat.

vapeHappy New Year everyone! There has been a drug gaining in popularity due to its compactness and discreet use. It is called vaping. Initially they were referred to as electronic cigarettes for people to use to decrease their intake of nicotine, but lately they have been more targeted towards teens and younger. The vape pens have several different looks to them, but they all have a main body part where there are batteries and the part that heats it up, the cartridge which is concentrated liquid nicotine, and the mouthpiece.  It will heat up the liquid and people smoke it with minimal smell.  They are small enough to put into your pocket unnoticed.  Some even have flavors such as very berry slushie, cinnamon roll, mint, coffee and so many others. Some kids try vaping for just the flavor, because who else would this be targeting except young kids?  No matter what the label says, smoking anything is dangerous for bodies, especially young bodies. The contents of the cartridge itself is extremely poisonous, especially to curious little hands. Smoking will always affect your lungs, throat, and bronchial tubes and no chemical is safe to smoke.  Most liquids have nicotine in them even if they claim they do not.

7thgradesoccerOn Friday October 13th, all seventh graders participated in one of our favorite activities of the year - the Seventh Grade World Cup of Soccer!  This grade-wide series of soccer matches was the culmination of two weeks of inter-disciplinary study in the students' specials classes.  In Spanish, Fitness, Music, and Family and Consumer Science students learned about the sport, sports nutrition, the role of national anthems and patriotism in athletics, and the role of soccer in contemporary Latin American society.
